Description Bids & Comments

Presentation

This 1962 Porsche 356B Roadster is one of 249 “twin grille” roadsters built with bodywork from Belgian coachbuilder D’Ieteren Frères. The car underwent a rotisserie refurbishment between 2005 and 2008, reportedly by Willhoit Auto Restoration of Long Beach, California, and work included rebuilding the flat-four and increasing its displacement to 1,925cc. It is finished in Champagne Yellow with a black soft top over green leather, and additional modifications include a 12-volt electrical system, an electric fuel pump, and 15″ TecnoMagnesio alloy wheels. This 356B Roadster was acquired by the current owner in 2021 and is now offered in Washington on dealer consignment at no reserve with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a tool kit, four steel wheels, and a clean Nevada title.

A successor to the Convertible D, the 356B roadster was introduced for the 1960 model year and was updated for its third and final year with T6 bodywork incorporating dual rear grilles. Prior to that transition, production was moved from Karosseriewerke Drauz in Germany to Belgian importer D’Ieteren.

This D’leteren-built body came finished from the factory in Champagne Yellow (6205) and was stripped to bare metal, mounted to a rotisserie, and repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment. Features include a black soft top, a chrome driver-side mirror, a windshield washer system, a removable windshield frame, fog lights, and a D’Ieteren badge.
1962 Porsche 356B Twin Grille Roadster photo 5
The 15×5″ TecnoMagnesio alloy wheels are mounted with Pirelli CN36 tires measuring 185/70 and showing date codes from 2019. The car was factory equipped with drum brakes at each corner. A set of 15″ steel wheels with October 1961 date stamps is included in the sale, and they are equipped with chrome covers as well as Michelin XZX tires.
1962 Porsche 356B Twin Grille Roadster photo 6
The front bucket seats and rear jump seats have been reupholstered in green leather, and interior appointments include a cabin heater, lap belts, Coco floor mats, and a body-color painted dashboard.

The wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel frames green-letter VDO instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline as well as a combination gauge for oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer was reset during the refurbishment and now shows 600 miles, approximately 200 of which were added by the current owner. Total mileage is unknown.

Having owned, back in the day, a 1958 1600 Normal Speedster and a 1961 Super 90 Roadster, I have long felt a 1962 Roadster is the ultimate in an open 356 Porsche. The only negative to this beauty is that it was born a Normal with 60 horsepower as opposed to a Super with 75 horsepower or better yet a Super 90 yes 90 horsepower and a camber compensator. Love the color combination, and good to see it getting bids it deserves.

Best presentation I’ve seen, ever, anywhere. I second the motion that the comments, the photos and the video be maintained for the future owners of this car and its brother. Absolutely as amazing as the seller says…
Sep 2, 2026 · 16:41
@Billbird Roadsters came standard with a single visor with a passenger visor as an extra cost option.
Sep 2, 2026 · 16:37
I noticed in the 2 car comparison video that the car for sale has only one sun visor while the companion car has 2 sun visors. Which is correct, or was that option. The 10/61 wheel dates are close enough to the build date to be considered OK.
I will be watching this auction closely for future agreed value insurance.
Will it hit 500K is the question? I hope it goes past that as fast as a 917K goes past a 914-6.

When it comes to what seperates good, from great, from WORLD CLASS when it relates to cars is subtle nuance. To an untrained eye and sadly in photos that nuance can sometimes be lost BUT to both the end user and those in the know those differences ultimately translate into both a level of satisfaction in ownership and long term value preservation. Its 1,000 small items that individually are inconsequential but in sum total are a game changer...
Real world to restore one of these to a true condition #1 vs even a 2+ might represent both 2-3x in cost but also the extraordinary challenge of finding the right skilled craftspeople with the passion and bandwidth to make this happen. This car represents the opportunity to have that true #1 car delivered to you door within days vs. years of waiting and anxiety!
This video captures just a hint of that nuance!

It was nice to chat with you and Nathan about these cars. As I mentioned to you, I also have one of these. In my case, it’s an unrestored example. I tell anyone who asks me that it’s my favorite car. It reminds me of a well broken-in baseball glove. It fits me perfectly and just works. I hope the new owner of this fine machine enjoys it as much as I enjoy mine.

Baat Community:
I had a chance to inspect this Twin Grille side by side with my matching Twin Grille for an extended period yesterday. This was a surreal experience to say the least. This car is a finer example than my own.
The car shows as new. Literally as new.
While mine is exceptionally clean and straight it shows as though it has a few well cared for miles while the auctioned car looks and feels factory fresh.
This car has a more desirable, in my mind, European configuration.
The motor enhancement I value at a push, I'd rather seen the original motor crated and replaced with the increased horse power unit, but it is undeniable that the motor build is exceptional and will be a joy to drive.
The car needs a green boot but this is a simple fix, the black top cover is just distracting.
My car has a desirable smokers package, but the auction car has a cleaner speedster feel dash.
I prefer the hue of my paint but this could be indoor lighting and or copious coats of wax ;) I don't know wat hue is correct and the difference is incredibly slight.
The restorations appear to be a push however, this chassis was reenforced and enhanced....I do not know if mine was.
All thigs being said its fun to know that two exist of such a limited run, and that they where back together for a spell.
The new owner will not be disappointed.

While champagne yellow might not be the rarest (2/5 on Rennbow), it sure does make the beautifully sculpted 356 body stand out at Cars & Coffee! The color has a slight hue in white and is on the lighter side of the yellow family, being similar to Condor Yellow, or the modern Cartagena Yellow of the 992.2. No matter the color, whether Bali blue or champagne yellow, this car deserves a toast 🥂! Best of luck!

Time to buy a POWERBALL ticket folks... As you might have ready we learned this car's twin brother amazingly also ended up in the Seattle area and the owner reached out! He brought VIN 89746 (ONE VIN number higher than the subject car!) which also left the factory in Champagne Yellow over Green. They last met almost 65 years ago and today they were reunited! Check out the video, some minor differences (89746 features US lenses front and rear, note I misspoke in one part of my video) and the other car was also a multi award winning example (Multiple Best in Class and Porsche Parade Gmund Award Winner), the owner indicated he will provide his thoughts in a comment sometime shortly. Thank you for bringing it over!

I feel blessed as a longtime friend and one of my 356 mentors, Mick Summa, was in town from Arizona and I invited him over to inspect and drive this Roadster. He has owned countless 356's including Speedsters, Convertible D, Roadster's, etc including 4 Wilhoit powered cars. I gave him carte blanche freedom to share his thoughts about the car during our drive and video. Hope you enjoy!
Aug 31, 2026 · 19:22
@jwillhoit it means the world to me that you would jump on here and share your knowledge! Your work is 2nd to none and it has been a pleasure to have been around this car for the past 5 years. Sadly I have been around and driven so many "shiny" 356's that don't drive or handle as Porsche designed; your cars are quite the exception as they pay honor to the true craftsmanship and engineering of these fine cars! If anyone is wanting a 356 or early 911/912 restored I can think of no better referral than Wilhoit. Not cheap nor fast, but nothing worthwhile in life is! See you at the next Lit meet! Thank you!-Nathan

I thought I should add some info and my opinion of the car. This was the 4th Twin Grill that we did and I found it for the customer. He chose it specifically because of the color combination. As you can see in the restoration images, it was completely metal finished and has no bondo filler. It also received our longitudinal stiffening which is a fantastic upgrade to any open car. It makes the chassis much stiffer and is completely invisible when finished. The level of detail is the best you'll find. I have no idea why the trans had been changed out, but the new one was rebuilt using a later 12 bolt differential and ring and pinion which is critical on these cars. The engine has the original case but was also upgraded to a late crank, rods, cylinder heads and rockers. The pistons and cylinders are 91mm so it's a 1925cc. It has a mild camshaft with Zenith carbs which limit the power to 104@5500 and peak torque of 115@4000. It's a super fun car and very easy to drive. The cost to do a full restoration of an identical car today would be $500K+. I'm happy to answer any questions on this forum and I've had several friends and customers already DM me for info.

What a beautiful car. The color combo is amazing. I'm sure the mechanicals are as well. In today's world of Flock cameras, maybe this type of car is the way to go. Let's face it, a GT3 type ride is going to get you in LPR trouble real fast. Maybe not so much with a hot rod 356 as I'm sure it's a lot of fun under 75 mph!

John Willhoit is an absolute legend and, in my opinion, one of the last of his kind. I was once his youngest customer, and he has built several cars for me over the years. His fit and finish are simply above anyone else’s, and his attention to detail is like no other. A restoration of this caliber would cost at least $500,000 today—assuming John even had the time to take it on. This is a completely unsolicited comment: I have no connection whatsoever to this car or the seller. I simply believe that true craftsmen like John are becoming increasingly rare, and they deserve to be recognized and celebrated.

I had 2 people ask me if this is the Twin Grille that sold last year at Gooding Christie's Amelia Island sale. No, BUT funny enough that car is ONE VIN number apart, so these two cars are siblings! Another remarkable example (I inspected the car at Motorlux 2024 in Monterey, beautiful!). It sold for $434,000:
So of the 248 Twin Grille's there is at least one other Champagne over green! https://www.elferspot.com/en/car/porsche-356-b-1600-1962-4487659/?sapw=980234&utm_source=paperpass&utm_medium=referral&srsltid=AfmBOor5DtPhX3QZrMx8-jVn58GTx53KIStPyYHceQMdFnACYSPuw-y9

Thank you for allowing me the privilege last night to inspect this remarkable vehicle, even better, to take it for a drive. I will most certainly be outbid, but I simply couldn't let the auction pass without throwing my hat into the ring. The documentation on this car is exceptional chassis, D'Ieteren body plate, paint code, CoA and the P*606975* case stamping all line up, and the underbody photos are the cleanest I've seen on a T6 Roadster. Three questions:
1.-The description says the 2005–2008 rotisserie refurbishment was "reportedly" by Willhoit. Do the invoices or build documentation accompany the car? Given the shop's reputation, that paperwork is a meaningful part of what a buyer is acquiring here. 2.-The odometer was reset during the refurbishment and shows 600 miles. How has the car been stored since 2008, how often has it been run, and what recommissioning has been done recently brake wheel cylinders and hoses, fuel lines and tank, the electric fuel pump, and the soft top seals? 3.-Eighteen years is a long time for rubber and hydraulics regardless of mileage. Who performed the 1,925cc rebuild, and are the specifications documented pistons and cylinders, cam, carburetion? The build photos in the gallery are encouraging but don't identify the components. Thanks for the thorough gallery. It's rare to see this level of detail on a D'Ieteren car.

Do you have any paperwork on the 2005-2008 restoration? Is that shop still in business & what is their experience..ie quality of reputation ? Thanks!

Aug 24, 2026 · 23:08
If you follow my listings, I run 95% of them at NO RESERVE as I believe in the process and believe that ultimately a well-presented car will sell for a market correct price. I will be honest with you; this Wilhoit restored car is the most nervous I have ever been! Why? Simply this; it is easy to make a 356 appear “nice” in photos, it is something ENTIRELY different to have a car that is PURE MAGIC... That IS this car. Every surface, every touchpoint, every door close, exudes that certain indescribable feeling. I will go on record and tell you that this is the finest restored 356 that I have had come thru my hands in 30 years. To DRIVE this car is to understand the magic of 356. I wish every enthusiast could have the chance to experience it. I really hope somehow the audience can FEEL that thru the presentation! So here goes, I am running it NO RESERVE, I am a SELLER not an advertiser nor a dreamer. This should be a fun week! A few initial thoughts:
I strive to be an engaged, knowledgeable, and transparent seller. As such feel free to ask questions either above or via direct message (DM) see the “contact seller” icon above. PLEASE see both my walkaround video as well as my photos as they should provide a very comprehensive understanding of what this car is and isn’t. Sadly, in many auctions lots of beautiful photos but a decided lack of substantive information means one must decide without a full set of facts. My goal is just the opposite; I might overwhelm you with information. Disclosure: Please Read Carefully
I am a lifelong Porsche enthusiast, and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge. My content can be found on YouTube, primarily through the Porsche Club of America. While I value my supporters, I want to clarify that I am not an all-knowing Porsche expert. My goal is to provide an honest and transparent experience, even if this approach deters some buyers. Some Key Points to Keep in Mind:
• I strive to sell honest cars, identifying and disclosing any known issues to the best of my ability. My aim is for you to love owning a Porsche. • No car is perfect. • I am human and fallible; I might miss something or have a subjective opinion that differs from yours. Inspections by others are also limited by human judgment. • I strongly recommend an in-person inspection (by you or a trusted professional) before bidding. This car is available for inspection by advance appointment. Inspections must be completed before the auction ends. Cars are sold as-is, with no warranties of any kind, expressed or implied. • Expectations vary by individual, so a personal visit is essential to ensure the car meets your needs. What will the car sell for? The good news is I have a definitive answer! It will sell for whatever the final bid is when the auction closes. No dreamer here, the car will sell for whatever the market is at that exact moment. My favorite kind of auction! I run my business as I’d like to be treated as a customer. If you have questions, feel free to reach out. Nathan
