Presentation

This 1968 Pontiac GTO hardtop coupe was acquired by the seller in 2020 after it was reportedly in long-term storage in a barn, and subsequent work consisted of overhauling the 400ci V8 and three-speed automatic transmission, replacing the vacuum motors for the retractable headlights, and installing an Edelbrock camshaft. The body is finished in red and features a twin-scoop hood, dual side mirrors, an Endura front bumper, and chrome wheel arch moldings, while the cabin is outfitted with black vinyl bucket seats, a center console, rosewood trim, a retro-look stereo, and Vintage Air climate control. The car is also equipped with a Hurst dual-gate shifter, power steering and brakes, Rally II wheels, and a rearview mirror camera display. This GTO hardtop is now offered with PHS Automotive Services documentation, service records, a car cover, and an Arkansas title in the seller’s name.

The body was repainted in the current shade of red under prior ownership, and the seller notes that LED lighting and a replacement vacuum motor for the retractable headlights were installed in 2024. A water leak at the rear glass was repaired in September 2025. Exterior equipment includes a color-keyed Endura front bumper, dual side mirrors, a twin-scoop hood, and chrome wheel arch moldings.

The 14″ Rally II wheels wear PMD center caps and are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. A full-size spare is located in the trunk. The car is equipped with power-assisted steering and brakes.

The cabin houses front bucket seats and a rear bench upholstered in black vinyl, and rosewood paneling accents the dashboard and center console. Replacement carpets line the floors, and appointments include a Hurst dual-gate shifter, a padded dashboard, a rearview mirror camera display, a retro-look Bluetooth receiver, and Vintage Air climate control.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames a suite of Dakota Digital instrumentation that includes a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a combination gauge with displays for oil pressure, voltage, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The odometer shows 51k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 400ci V8 was overhauled in May 2023, and the associated service record displayed in the gallery indicates the cylinder heads were machined, and an Edelbrock Performer Plus camshaft kit was installed. The engine breathes through a four-barrel carburetor atop an Edelbrock intake manifold.

The interior is NOT musty. It is a very clean car.
Sep 3, 2026 · 15:56
Dfhodg: there is no active rust on or under the car. You are welcome to come look at the car. There is a trace of rust in a wheel well, but has been treated.
Sep 3, 2026 · 15:50
To ByronLakeaway: the brakes are disc breaks.
Sep 3, 2026 · 15:49
To Gar-Lor49: yes you can come take a look at the car. We will not be able to show it to you until next Tuesday since we will be out of town. Please text me ar 479.4327.0222 to set up a time for you to come here. We are 1 1/2 to 2 hr drive south of Joplin.

Looks great, yet photos of the underside would be nice to address any rust or quality of rust repairs. A driving video would as help. I mean help both the seller with a greater return and also us shoppers as bids are limited when there are unknowns.

I assume drum brakes on the front as well. That is the first thing I would change if it still has drum brakes in the front. Its cheap insurance.

This brings me back to my childhood. It was about 1978 in suburban Seattle. Every single day, i would walk by a mint 1968 GTO like this, but in dark green with the vinyl top.
When I finally got the nerve to ask about it, a man in his late 20’s told me he bought it and it threw a rod at 22,000 miles. It was all he got in the divorce. But he wouldn’t ever sell it because one day he’d get back on his feet and get that thing fixed.
The way he looked at that car… it was almost haunting. Since then… the lines of the 68 and especially the front fascia have lived in my head as THE dream vehicle. One day…

I'm partial to Verdoro Green, but this color is beautiful on this car. I had a 68 similar to this color (I painted mine burgundy, also a color change). It really works with the lines of the car.
Vintage air is a nice touch especially these days. But there's that Buick air cleaner decal again!
