Presentation

This Ferrari 250 GTO re-creation was constructed beginning in 1985 by its current owner at his restoration shop, Badsaddle Stables in Northamptonshire, England, using the shortened chassis of a right-hand-drive 1978 Ferrari 400i and a widened replica aluminum body sourced from Eurospares. The car was completed over the course of approximately seven years with power from a 4.4-liter 365 GT4 four-cam Colombo V12 and has since been driven regularly on the road, including a tour of Europe, alongside occasional club races and hillclimbs in the UK and abroad. In 2009, it was fitted with a 5.75-liter F133E V12 that was sourced from a Ferrari 575M and modified with Jenvey individual throttle bodies, a custom cast intake manifold, custom-fabricated exhaust manifolds, and a DTAFast sequential ECU. Additional modifications added at that time included a Ferrari 550 six-speed manual transaxle, disc brakes incorporating Wilwood calipers and rotors with adjustable bias, adjustable coilover shock absorbers, Borrani competition wire wheels accommodated by fender flares, and a foam-filled aluminum fuel tank. Finished in red, the car also features a transparent Perspex engine bulge, fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather, and a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel. This 575M-powered 250 GTO re-creation is now offered in Bicester, England, at no reserve on dealer consignment by Sports Purpose, a BaT Local Partner, with build photos, invoices, and V5C registration.

The 250 GTO was developed in 1961 as Ferrari’s competition department sought to address the aerodynamic shortcomings of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta for the approaching 1962 FIA International Championship for GT manufacturers. Initial design of the model began under the lead of Giotto Bizzarrini, whose 1961 firing left the remainder of styling and eventual construction to Scaglietti. Each with distinct bodywork details, 36 examples of the original 250 GTO, or Gran Turismo Omologato, were built between 1962 and 1964 to lead Ferrari to three consecutive International Championship for GT Manufacturers titles.

This re-creation’s aluminum body is said to have been widened by 2” on each side to accommodate the wider track of a 400i oval-tube frame that was shortened to match the 250 GTO model’s 2,400mm wheelbase and used as the base for construction of a 250 GTO-style spaceframe. According to the selling dealer, the body was purchased by the owner from Eurospares, which claimed at the time that it was built by Scaglietti. Previously finished in yellow, the car was repainted in red approximately six months ago. Features include faired-in headlights, rectangular fog lamps, three D-shaped nose inlets, a transparent Perspex hood bulge providing a view of the intake trumpets, triple angled fender vents, a driver-side mirror, flared rear fenders, vents behind the rear wheels, rear-window ventilation scoop, a rear spoiler, and quad exhaust outlets.

Silver-painted Borrani wire wheels with polished lips measure 15×7.5″ up front and 15×9″ at the rear and are secured by three-eared knock-offs. Avon tires measure 245/60 and 275/55 at front and rear, respectively. The suspension components and hubs are said to have been sourced from a Ferrari 365 GT4, and dampening has been updated with adjustable coilover shock absorbers. Stopping is handled by Wilwood disc brakes with adjustable bias.

The right-hand-drive cockpit houses a pair of fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather with matching quilted upholstery over the center tunnel. Additional features include blue Willans harnesses, a gated shifter, and a fire suppression system.

The Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation including a central tachometer with an 8k-rpm redline flanked by gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel pressure, fuel level, oil pressure, and oil temperature. A 180-mph Veglia Borletti speedometer is situated to the driver’s left, but is not connected. The odometer shows 33k miles, and according to the selling dealer mileage since the build is estimated at 18k miles.

Thank you for all your comments over the last 10 days. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed speaking to every one of you about this wild car.
As a reminder, this car is No Reserve, so it’s 100% selling to the highest bidder in just under 2 hours’ time.
We’re very happy to help the winner with shipping and with any work they choose to have done, such as the LHD conversion at Project Heaven.
This car is a pretty unique proposition so please don’t leave any bids on the table!
Cheers

@Holymoly, I have just responded to your DM. Thanks, Rory
Oct 29, 2026 · 08:51
@Holymoly We could put the hood back to the standard GTO powerdome for £3000. @Sports Purpose (Rory) posted all the details about the LHD conversion which we could carry out for £25000 in his post of Oct 21 below.
The centre console doesn't get in the way at all. It was made like that for the original 365GT4 5 speed gearbox mounted directly behind the engine and we could have narrowed it considerably if I had felt it was necessary when we swapped it for the rear mounted 550 6-speed transaxle. It would be a very easy thing to narrow if that were desired for any reason
Oct 29, 2026 · 07:25
@willtomkins nice to see you around. Quick questions: What would be the estimated cost/effort to swap the Perspex hood for a closed (smaller) alloy powerdome, and what's involved in an LHD conversion? Also, looking at that massive center console/tunnel, does it get in the way of your leg/knee while driving? Thanks!
@Sports_Purpose Sent a PM regarding import/broker details.

If you need a bit more headroom for racing you can just take out the seat cushion
Oct 28, 2026 · 15:53
I know this is a weird follow up, but are you mostly legs or mostly torso? I am 6'2.5" w/ 34" inseam, so I am 50/50, but one of my racing co drivers is 6'3 with a 31" inseam, and he doesn't fit in a lot of cars that I do because he's all torso and doesn't pass the "broomstick test"
Oct 28, 2026 · 15:29
Hi, Im the chap in the first driving video and the mechanic thats that looks after this car. I'm 6'2" and no problem with headroom. We work on lots of exotic cars and this is hands down the best car ive ever driven and will be sad to see it go.

hi Everyone
Please see two onboard driving videos that we filmed last week posted below and added to the gallery. The first video is on local public roads and the second is on our onsite test track.
On the road, the car is easy to get to grips with, visibility is excellent, the engine has bags of torque and the friendly clutch makes pulling away at junctions easy. The steering is slightly heavy at low speeds but this is partially offset by the large steering wheel.
The onsite test track is quite short so the car makes quick work of the straight barely getting out of 3rd gear. The gearing is quite long and the car will do well over 200mph on a runway. The car is reasonably stiff so it handled the circuit well, there was no brake fade and temperatures were consistent after 15 minutes of pushing.
In summary the car feels off the charts quick and the engine noise is epic, especially with the trumpets. The whole experience is incredibly engaging and memorable.
Do keep the questions coming, viewings at our showroom in Bicester are available by appointment.
cheers, Rory

@LapsPG Great questions, thank you.
The car was repainted yellow in 2022 and then covered only around 1,500 miles over the following four years.
As it was in such good condition it was deemed unnecessary to take it back to bare metal again so the yellow was flatted back and the red applied over it. The respray was comprehensive and covered all parts including the door jambs and shuts. I can confirm it looks very smart in person.
The work was carried out by Project Heaven Restoration in their concours quality shop where they have painted numerous significant classics & modern cars.
Specialising in post war Aston Martins, Ferrari, Maserati, XK's, XKE's & Porsches, their website is well worth a look where you can see it's a top quality set up.
They use Lechler paints and have the full Lechler mixing scheme. Will worked with them to get the exact shade of red he wanted and this is recorded in the scheme and can be reproduced on demand. Touch up paint will be supplied with the car.
cheers, Rory

@Holymoly Thanks for your kind words, glad you’re enjoying it as much as we are! Brexit has certainly made things a lot more complicated.
One thing worth looking at is that under the UK-EU trade agreement, cars of UK origin can enter the EU at 0% duty. Given the car was rebuilt in the UK and is largely made up of Italian Ferrari components (chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension), there may be a case for it qualifying for preferential origin which would take the 10% duty out of the equation though import VAT would still apply.
It would need confirming by a customs broker but would be worth a European buyer exploring which we'd be happy to assist with.
thanks, Rory

Holymoly - what an absolute riot of a build. 600+ hp from a Maranello V12 on ITBs with a gated 6-speed in an alloy GTO body is pure perfection.
Truly a shame that post-Brexit EU customs make bidding from Germany so painful. Because of the shortened chassis and the 2002 575M drivetrain, customs won't clear this under the 9705 collector tariff (0% duty / 7% VAT), meaning we get hit with the full 10% import duty plus 19% VAT on top of the hammer price. Combine that ~31% tax penalty with the German TÜV hurdles for a non-period-correct engine swap, and I unfortunately have to sit on my hands for this one - or at least I'll try to. Really wish it were still pre-Brexit days. GLWTA!

@piersg , thank you, we drove it this morning for some more video footage though I didn't do any donuts despite the owner encouraging me too! @Muybenno , we do not have photos of the repaint I'm afraid but it looks good in the flesh, no runs, mask lines or bubbling that I can see. On the import duty, I think 15% is possible yes if you import it on the chassis number to the USA though application of the final 2.5% duty has been inconsistent from what I have heard.
Oct 21, 2026 · 06:55
@meteor1955 - 575M engine is worth about $20k. MAYBE $50k number with the 6sp transaxle as well as the ecu, and all the custom parts that the seller built to run the ITBs. But, as you alluded to, that's fairly inconsequential in the overall pricing of this vehicle.

We expect this car to appeal to buyers outside the UK, including in Europe and the USA and while we would argue RHD is no issue in countries that drive on the wrong side of the road ;-) , the owner’s business, Project Heaven, has put together the document below outlining the work involved in converting the car to LHD. The conversion would cost £25,000 plus VAT if applicable, take 4 to 6 weeks, and can be completed before delivery. We’re also very happy to help with shipping. As a guide, shipping to the USA would cost between £5,000 and £10,000 depending on the arrangement and destination and import duty into the USA is currently around 12.5%. Please get in touch with us directly if you’d like an individual quote.

@sixtyvalve. Maybe it’s a recreation of one of the eight RHD cars and it was built in Great Britain. RHD not uncommon on European race cars anyway as most circuits are clockwise. The early Ferrari race transporters were RHD for a similar reason. Race driver to judge a right hand apex better and lorry driver to not put three 375 F1s at the bottom of an Alpine pass.

The principle value of this creation is the 12 cylinder engine wich is pretty old and of unknown but likely high miles? I for one will not consider bidding without a compression and leakdown on the engine and some reading on the oil pressure at various revs and at steady speed? Bluntly there is not near enough here to be expected to put up a couple $100k bid?

So, 6 years ago, it was for sale for 500,000GBP. Any guesses on hammer price?

RHD makes perfect sense when the builder planned to (and did) use the car in the UK. It would be an issue for me when passing on narrow two lane roads, you know, the fun kind of roads. 600 hp does cure a lot of ills, maybe even the steering wheel on the "wrong" side. The 575 swap is surely novel as is the 400 base. So a strong performer with some unusual choices, but still 100% Ferrari. Lots to love here. If you just want a fast car, maybe a Datsun with a body kit would be more to your liking. How does 8.8 @ 160 in the quarter sound? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zwpPTU9acOQ&pp=ygUkRmVycmFyaSBkcmFnIHJhY2UgdHdpbiB0dXJibyAyNTAgZ3Rv

Sad to see the most-appropriate-ever 2 SXY plates disappear with the yellow paint!

@happiesttrees - It's in the video. Wheelbase is the same as an original. Track is the same as the Ferrari 400 and the overall width is 4 inches wider than an original GTO...

Sixtyvalve - I drive my RHD skyline in the US quite regularly. Zero issues. And David Lee just paid $33M for a RHD GTO for use in CA. It is not a big deal.

@seller well done, mate, well done. Since there aren’t any traditional specs on this rendering can you please provide the wheelbase, front track, rear track and overall width? Thanks

Why would you put the wheel on the wrong side. This would have brought so much more with the whole world trying to buy it, not just UK Japan and Australia.

The oh-so-real driving video would make Jeremy Clarkson proud. I didn’t see that Rockford turn coming. Outstanding! To paraphrase Candace Bergen from behind the wheel of the Dino 246 GTS in “11 Harrowhouse,” this expert wheelman’s not reckless, he‘s skillful! What a build. What a listing. WOW.
